There are several considerations to be made when seeking an estimate for a yacht delivery. The size of the vessel and resultant responsibilities, the captain's license, the number of crew required (more for sailing vessels of comparable size), the speed of the vessel, and the distance to be covered.
Additional considerations include the time of year the voyage is being conducted in, and then consumable fees: port clearances, slippage, fuel, travel, repatriation, per diem food and provisions, and potential lay-days due to weather or mechanical failure with the possibility of repairs at additional expense. For these reasons it is best to have a vessel in an already well-equipped and seaworthy condition as misrepresentation may result in breech of contract with a loss of initial security deposits and travel expenses.
For these reasons, most often a quote will be delivered by phone or email, although there are some universal considerations for daily rates which should help provide the customer with some approximate idea of the estimate:
Captain rates range $300-$500 daily based on license.
Crew rates average $100 daily (higher if licensed or specialized).
Per diem provisions $25 per person blue water / $50 ICW (especially if single handing).
Vessels over 40' have an additional $1/ft. per-day per-person expense.
Consumables (food/fuel/slippage/etc.) are always in addition to the estimate.
The final amount may be higher or lower depending on passage time.
50% of the estimate, plus the cost of travel, to be payable up front.
For all of this a great deal is being offered in return. The captain in question will be licensed for the vessel by the controlling body of the United States and will also be bonded by an insurance agency to cover against reasonable loss, as additional crew provided by the captain will also be insured to protect against liability of injury or damage to property.
Though rates may change depending on which captain is selected and subsequent level of experience required, a basic estimate to retain a private captain is approximately a rate of $50.00 to 75.00/hour onboard and $20.00/hour for travel, charged by the half hour increment. Because of the wide variety of flexibility of services offered, quotes must be determined on an individual basis. For this a captain may be retained for:
Many captains, specialized deckhands, or licensed marine engineers are highly competent in conducting oil changes, preventative maintenance programs, and basic mechanical or electrical repairs. Boating should be quality time spent on the water--a large part of that is the preparation that goes into making sure the vessel operates as it is meant to! Rates vary from $50.00/hour to $75.00/hour depending on the nature of the work, the length of the task, and the experience required for the job.
